This add-in was inspired by a request in a Microsoft user forum for a function to allow a set of documents to be opened. That of itself is easy enough to achieve, but this add-in expands on that premise to include all the back room tasks associated with maintaining and using such a list and in the latest version (from 1.7) multiple lists of documents may be stored and applied as required.
The lists are stored in the PC's registry.
When correctly installed the add-in will place a button group at the right end of the Home tab of the Word ribbon:
The group comprises four buttons. The first is related to the creation, selection and editing of the available document lists.
The second opens any of the available lists and sets that selection as the active list.
The third saves and closes the open documents from the active set. The fourth opens a drop down list where you will find buttons to add documents to and remove them from list. There is a button to close ALL open documents, a pair of buttons to backup and restore existing lists and a button to reset the defaults, which will include removal of all the saved lists from the registry, so should be treated with caution, however users will be warned to save any existing lists, the first time the latest version is installed, if the user already has version 1.7 or later installed..
The backup lists are stored in a text file in the same folder as the add-in template - OpenDocsRegistryBackup.txt
Using the functions couldn't be simpler. If you have a document open and click 'Save to Doc List' that document's name and path are added to the list (if they are not already present). Similarly clicking 'Remove from Doc List' will remove the document from the list, if it is present in the list.
The second button in they add-in's ribbon group 'Open Document Set', presents a list of the available document sets, with the currently active list pre-selected.
Open the selected list, or select any of the predefined lists to open that list and set it as the active list. This will remain the active list until changed from either dialog.
Some Word users frequently work with the same set of documents open. The purpose of this add-in is to maintain a list of such documents which may all be opened (and subsequently saved and closed) together when working on a particular project.
